Welcome to this little time capsule. I wanted to get some thougthts from my friends and family and people I admire around the world. A collection of thoughts on this time we’re in mixed with any visuals you want to share. A mini interview on now.

I’d love to share these responses in this blog style for now. Then, I want to hide it all, take the link offline, keep this all as a time capsule then resend you it all a year later. A little time experiment in reflection. Maybe if any of you know anyone that codes we could make it an interactive map of interviews and responses?

So if you have the time, would love for you to participate and share your story. You can fill it out in this Google Forms Link

Here’s Maria’s response

Let’s start with your full name

Maria Piessis

How are you today?

Today, I’m surprisingly energized. I just drank some Maté (mat-ay) and feel focused and productive, compared to most of the time when I’m genuinely much less motivated due to the circumstances. I have been trying to create a routine, but in all honesty it’s tough. Especially when you want to be creative.

Where in the world are you at the moment? What are your quarantine quarters like? Who are you with if anyone? Paint a picture and tell us how long it’s been.

I’m in Paris at the moment. We stayed here in the city center with my boyfriend. It’s typically a really beautiful and bustling area, but now empty. A lot of people that live here have other homes so they quickly moved to the countryside for more space. Rightly so. We see our neighbors everyday. You kind of have a very Rear Window experience. The sun shines in thoughout the day, it’s nice to have the windows open to feel the air.

Can you draw or share a little picture of your view? (you can just paste it in here or attach to mail: )

Are you still working? How do you set up your days if so?  Thoughts on work at this time in general?

I have still some projects I’m working on, but less than before. No shoots scheduled. So I have more free time to take on projects out of interest. But I  need to reach out to try to get some more design work to keep things steady. I’m using this time to work on my own projects I have long wanted to bring to life.

You dressing up or down these days?

Man, I wish I was saying dressing up more, but I am dressing relatively down. I try to exercise in the morning, then when I get dressed it’s casual office attire. A nice shirt or sweater and jeans mostly. Maybe I should shake it up today and put on something fancy.

What do you find yourself thinking about the most these days?

The world, visiting my family that is far away, when will I get to see them, hope that people are not too lonely. I can self entertain and am a pretty social introvert, so I don’t mind alone time or confines, but of course it wears on you. We all want contact. I just hope people call their friends and families regularly to make sure everyone is morally alright. I worrry about people being too lonely. And the world in general, the economy, interactions, fear. What is going to happen after we can go back out?

What have you done during this time that you’ve never done before? Or put off?

Well cleaning is always a favorite past time. So I went deep down to reorganize our closet and whole bedroom. Cooking a lot too, making things I didn’t have time for. Also reading : )

If you could eat any meal from anywhere what would you have?

Oh man. Macroplate from Souen with extra tahini.
Or something fresh and mediterranean like from Mandolin Bistro or Mogador. Haloumi. Mmmm.

Have these being at home constraints actually unconstrained you? Freed you in a way?

I guess I do feel this calmness with the whole world being still. I was always rushing to get ahead and felt always behind because I need more time to explore creatively, but at the same time feel behind career-wise. So it’s kind of pause to not have this production pressure on me, which in that sense, I am thankful for. The other side of that is of course financial worries. Still need to hustle to figure out new ways to keep income coming. Our bills aren’t going away.

What do you miss the most about the normal world?

Meeting with friends, walks, biking, going out to restaurants. My studio. I miss just observing and living daily life. The idea of travel now stalled is not that pleasant. My significant people are all over the world, I want to see them soon.

Who are you in touch with the most? Or who do you wish you could hang with?

My mom, my dad, family, cousin, friends in the US. Wish I could have them all in one place at a huge dinner party that starts early and ends never, we’d just chat the whole night away with everyone and laugh and have vino and candles and dance. Soon I hope.

What do you hope will really change in the future after we are on the other new side?

I hope things are valued for what they are. Think things have become so overvalued and we have been overspending, overconsuming all that. I hope it crafts a more meaningful lifestyle I guess.

Have you done anything creative? What have you made, cooked, assembled, organized? How’d it make you feel?

I think this is the only thing that makes me happy and I’m so thankful I have art. It’s the one outlet that brings the light to everything. I can’t explain the pleausre I get from creating something that didn’t exist before. Making something, anything for me is meditation and how I stay sane. I did some sewing to make masks, I paint, I watercolor, I just assemble things. Anything that keeps me occupied.

Do you have a picture?

What do you want to tell your future self a year from now?

Life is those who you love. Stay connected to them always. Create as much as possible and in that creativity find new ways to be useful to the world. Good to always have a stocked pantry. As introverted as I can be, I realize how much I need and miss and need to be engaged with people to create.

Anything interesting you’ve read? Reading

The beauty of everyday things.
I really liked this essay by Paul Graham

What are you more grateful now?

Those closest to me in my life. How much I love them and miss the ones I’m not with right now. Grateful for my health and technology.

What do you want to remember the most or not at all during this time?

All the facetimes, that we should do it more often even. Nature, how much I need it.

Share any images you want of what you’d like to remember, or remind yourself about, or just of your space, routine, hairstyle, outfit, coffee or whatever you feel.

I miss the mountains and nature so much!

Thank you!

Love,

Maria
